Hockey India Chief Highlights Women’s Team Triumph in PM Meeting
During the audience with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey spotlighted the historic success of the Indian women’s hockey squad. He recalled that after a 44‑year wait, the team broke the drought by defeating the silver‑medal‑winning Chinese side at the Asian Games, a feat that also earned them a respectable fifth place at the recent World Cup.
Tirkey praised the Prime Minister for publicly acknowledging the women’s team and for the broader encouragement shown to both men’s and women’s hockey. He said, “The Prime Minister’s words boost morale and signal a bright future for the sport in India.”
The remarks were part of a larger gathering where multiple medal‑winning athletes shared how government initiatives like TOPS and Khelo India have facilitated overseas training, modern equipment and financial support, turning India into a competitive sporting nation.
