Historic Win for Jodar: From Quarterfinals to Shanghai Masters Semifinal at Age 19

The Shanghai Masters witnessed a historic moment on October 16 when 19‑year‑old Rafael Jodar defeated Casper Ruud 4‑6, 6‑4, 6‑3. The Spaniard’s victory not only earned him a place in the semifinals but also made him the youngest player ever to achieve this feat at the event.

Earlier in the tournament, Jodar had already made headlines by overcoming Botic van de Zjandshulp in a 2‑hour‑30‑minute match, 6‑7(4), 6‑4, 6‑2, becoming the second‑youngest quarter‑finalist in Shanghai Masters history. His run continued with the win over Ruud, solidifying his reputation as a rising star.

The match itself was a test of endurance. Ruud captured the first set after breaking Jodar’s serve, but the Spaniard fought back, breaking back in the second set and eventually taking it 6‑4. In the final set, Jodar broke Ruud three times, closing the contest decisively.

Jodar’s performance has also boosted his chances of qualifying for the ATP Finals, as he now sits ninth in the live race to Turin, ahead of Novak Djokovic and Alex de Minaur. His record against top‑30 opponents since July stands at an impressive 10‑2.

In the semifinals, Jodar will face either Denis Medvedev, who is just ahead of him in the live race, or Tommy Paul. Spanish teammate Alejandro Davidovich Fokina also reached the semifinals, marking the fifth instance since 2014 that more than one Spanish player has made it to the semifinals of a Masters 1000 event.
