Historic Title Defence: Alcaraz Joins Elite Club of Japan Open Champions
Carlos Alcaraz made history on Tuesday by becoming the third male player to defend the Japan Open title since 1994. The 22‑year‑old Spaniard outlasted Czech qualifier Jiri Lehecka 7-6(4), 6-4 in the final held at the Ariake Coliseum in Tokyo.
Alcaraz’s win mirrors the achievements of Stefan Edberg, who captured three consecutive Japan Open crowns from 1989 to 1991, and Pete Sampras, who secured back‑to‑back titles in 1993 and 1994. The Spanish star’s triumph is especially notable after a wrist injury sidelined him for months, making this his first championship since February.
After the match, Alcaraz expressed gratitude: “I’m very happy to win the trophy again. After being away with the injury, this victory feels even more special. Winning my second tournament back means a lot to me.” He admitted the week had been difficult, but emphasized that finding the right solutions on court was key to his success.
Reflecting on his recovery, Alcaraz said, “During rehab, many negative thoughts crossed my mind – will I be fully fit, will I hit without pain? My team and I knew I had to feel 100% ready; otherwise, the comeback would be pointless. I trusted my team, trusted myself, and everything fell into place.”
