In a milestone for Indian women’s football, the national Under-20 team has arrived in Bangkok for the upcoming AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup. The 24 players landed on Friday, strategically early to get accustomed to Thai conditions before their Group C battles begin on April 2.
Returning to the Asian Cup after two decades, India faces powerhouses Japan first, then Australia and Chinese Taipei. The 13-day window in Bangkok allows intensive training sessions tailored to local weather and venues. Group toppers and select runners-up advance to quarterfinals, with quarterfinal victors earning FIFA U20 World Cup 2026 berths in Poland.
Led by Swedish tactician Joakim Alexandersson, preparations were thorough. Training camps started in Bengaluru in January, followed by a productive month in Sweden featuring friendlies against top club seniors. Post-Scandinavia, Kolkata hosted the final pre-departure sessions, from where the team flew out Friday morning.
Final squad selection to 23 looms as the event approaches. Goalkeepers: Monalisha Devi Moirangthem, Nandini, Ribancy Jamu.
