Historic Double for India as Borgohain Wins Gold on Her Birthday

Lavlina Borgohain made history at the 2026 Asian Games by winning the women’s 75 kg boxing gold on the same day she celebrated her 29th birthday. The bout against Chinese rival Bao Jiayi ended with a unanimous 5-0 decision in favor of the Indian star.

The final was a tactical showdown. Borgohain started cautiously, absorbing Bao’s early aggression before exploiting gaps in her defense. The plan paid off, and she accumulated points steadily, leaving no doubt for the judges.

Her triumph adds a twelfth gold medal to India’s overall count and makes her the second Indian woman, after Mary Kom, to capture Asian Games gold in boxing. Borgohain now holds the unique record of being the only Indian female boxer with both gold and silver medals from the Games, underscoring her rising legacy.
