Historic Back-to-Back Asian Games Medals for India’s Super Heavyweight Boxer
Narendra Berwal’s bronze finish at the 2026 Asian Games marks a historic achievement for India’s super‑heavyweight boxing scene. The 92+ kg category, traditionally dominated by nations such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and China, now sees an Indian contender standing on the podium for the second time in a row.
The veteran pugilist, hailing from Haryana, reflected on his journey, noting the rigorous training camps and the tactical improvements that helped him repeat his success from the previous edition of the Games. "Winning two medals consecutively shows that Indian boxing is evolving across all weight divisions," Berwal said.
His medal also guarantees a slot at the World Championships, a critical stepping stone toward earning an Olympic berth for Los Angeles 2028. The Boxing Federation of India highlighted the significance of this result, pointing out that heavyweight medals were once considered out of reach for Indian fighters.
Alongside Berwal, teammates Lovlina Borgohain, Parveen Hooda and Ankush Panghal captured gold, while Priya Ghanghas and Kapil Pokharia added bronze, lifting India’s boxing tally to six medals at the Games.
