Hamilton Sets Record-Breaking Mexico GP Pole at 41

Mexico City, November 1: Lewis Hamilton has claimed pole position for the Mexico Grand Prix, marking his first pole for Ferrari and a landmark moment in a career that has spanned decades.

The seven-time world champion ended a long wait for pole with the Italian team. Hamilton had previously topped a qualifying timesheet at the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix, but this was his first pole with Ferrari.

He finished ahead of George Russell, his former Mercedes teammate, while his current Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc qualified third at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

It was Hamilton's 105th career pole position. Overwhelmed by the result, he said he struggled to find the right words, describing the feeling as wonderful and saying he was very happy.

The weekend had been challenging. Hamilton said the team had used a rake setup in FP1 and then faced an engine-related issue, which left them well off the pace. He also said he had not been able to complete a long run, but added that the team had made significant setup progress throughout the weekend.

He said the competition remains extremely close, noting that he had not been able to complete his opening Q2 lap and believed some rivals had new tyres for their first runs.

Hamilton had previously taken pole at the Mexico Grand Prix in 2016. The circuit is now the 22nd where he has secured more than one pole. At 41, he has also become the oldest driver to take pole in Formula One since Mario Andretti at the 1982 Italian Grand Prix.

Reflecting on his achievement, Hamilton said that a strong desire can help a person find a way forward. He said much of the challenge is mental and that he works hard to keep his body young and fit, including regular ice baths. He added that he still loves his job and is grateful for the support he receives worldwide.
