Gullvir Singh Adds 1500m Silver to 10,000m Medal at Asian Games
Nagoya, 28 September – The Asian Games 2026 witnessed Indian long‑distance runner Gullvir Singh claim a second silver medal, this time in the men’s 1500 metres. After a runner‑up finish in the 10,000‑metre final on 25 September, Singh posted a personal best of 3:36.72 to secure silver on Monday.
Japan’s Kajuto Ijawa touched the finish line first in 3:36.35, setting a new Asian Games record, while his compatriot Nagia Mori completed the podium in 3:37.92.
This silver marks Singh’s third medal at a single Asian Games, joining the earlier 10,000‑metre silver and a bronze earned at the 2023 Hangzhou edition. By winning two medals in the 10,000‑metre discipline across different Games, Singh entered the record books as the first Indian to accomplish this feat.
In the men’s 3000‑metre steeplechase, India’s Avinash Sabale recorded a season‑best 8:21.67 but finished fourth, trailing Japan’s gold‑medallist Ryuji Miura by 4.31 seconds. Japan’s Ryoma Aoki earned silver with 8:17.60, and Qatar’s Zakarija Illahlamy took bronze in 8:18.13.
Yunus Shah, also representing India, posted a slightly quicker heat time than Singh (3:45.77 against 3:45.79) and qualified for the final, where he placed ninth with a time of 3:43.88 after a strong early race.
Singh’s double‑silver haul underscores the ascending standard of Indian athletes in middle‑ and long‑distance track events across Asia.
