United World Wrestling (UWW) on Tuesday lifted the ban imposed on Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Let us tell you that earlier on August 23, UWW had suspended the membership of Indian Wrestling Association because the players had opposed the newly elected president. But UWW has now lifted the suspension and reinstated the membership with immediate effect.
According to sources, UWW recently reviewed the suspension of Indian Wrestling Association and decided to lift the suspension. Regarding the lifting of the ban imposed on WFI, United World Wrestling said, “The UWW Bureau met on February 9 to review the suspension, among other matters, and considering all factors and information, the suspension is being lifted with certain conditions.” Took a decision.
Indian Wrestling Association will have to conduct re-election of its Athlete Commission. Candidates for this commission must be active athletes or have not been retired for more than four years. Voters should be athletes. “These elections can be conducted during the first trial or any senior national championship before July 1, 2024.”
UWW further said, “The Indian Wrestling Association will soon have to give a written guarantee to United World Wrestling that all wrestlers will be allowed to participate in WFI events without any discrimination, especially for the Olympic Games and other major national and international events.” Will be allowed. This also includes the three athletes who had protested against the alleged wrongdoings of the former president. “UWW will be in touch with the wrestlers.”
It is noteworthy that the wrestlers led a long agitation under the leadership of Bajrang Punia, Sakshi Malik and Vinesh Phogat, after which Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh had to step down from the post. After Brij Bhushan’s departure, his close aide Sanjay Singh was elected President of the Indian Wrestling Association. Two days after Sanjay became the president, the Sports Ministry suspended the Indian Wrestling Association because the players protested against him. At the same time, Olympic bronze medalist Sakshi had announced her retirement from wrestling in protest against Sanjay.
