NEW DELHI — Speaking to a national news outlet, former AIFF general secretary Shaji Prabhakar argued that India’s path to the FIFA World Cup does not require miracles but systematic effort. He said that while the nation boasts over 1.4 billion people, the lack of coordinated grass‑root programmes, fragmented governance and limited exposure for elite players have kept the national team out of the tournament. Prabhakar proposed a “project‑based” model where resources are pooled across government, private sponsors and football federations to run nationwide academies, provide international exposure for promising under‑17 squads, and hire experienced foreign technical staff. He also warned against over‑reliance on the Indian Super League, urging a balanced development that gives equal weight to school‑level competitions and elite clubs. Referencing the current World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, Prabhakar noted that the event will attract nearly two billion viewers and generate a $40 billion global economic impact, underscoring football’s power to unite and inspire. He concluded that with transparent management, consistent funding and a clear long‑term vision, India can realistically aim for World Cup qualification within the next 10‑15 years.
