Glasgow to Host 10 Sports at Commonwealth Games 2026, Six Dropped
The upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow will be markedly smaller than its predecessor in Birmingham, with only ten sports on the programme. The reduction reflects a strategic decision to concentrate resources and deliver a high‑impact event within a compact geographical footprint.
Athletics, swimming, artistic gymnastics, track cycling, netball, weightlifting, boxing, judo, bowls, and the new 3x3 basketball formats – both traditional and wheelchair – have earned a spot. Each discipline will feature both able‑bodied and para categories where applicable, generating a total of 60 medal events.
Six sports that were part of the 2022 Games will be absent: cricket, field hockey, badminton, wrestling, squash, rhythmic gymnastics, table tennis, diving, rugby sevens, beach volleyball and mountain bike racing. Their exclusion narrows the focus to core Olympic‑style competitions and emerging urban sports.
Glasgow’s venue plan clusters the action within an eight‑kilometre corridor. The Glasgow International Arena will host gymnastics, the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome will run track cycling, the SEC Armadillo will see weightlifting and para‑powerlifting, and the SEC Centre will house boxing, judo, bowls and the 3x3 basketball events. The Tollcross International Swimming Centre will hold all swimming contests, and Scotstoun Stadium will be the stage for athletics and para‑athletics.
