Gill’s 223 fuels India’s chase of 406, secures series lead

Guwahati, September 30 – Shubman Gill’s monumental unbeaten 223 runs were the cornerstone of India’s successful pursuit of a 406‑run target against West Indies. The innings, played under oppressive heat, left the captain with cramps in virtually every muscle, a fact he confirmed during the post‑match interview.

India needed to chase the second‑largest total ever achieved in an ODI, and Gill’s controlled aggression made the daunting task manageable. He punctuated his knock with 26 boundaries and eight sixes, ensuring the scoreboard kept moving. After 89 balls, he reached the 150‑run mark, and by the 117th delivery, he had completed a double century – the quickest in ODI history.

Gill highlighted the challenges posed by the weather, noting that the relentless sun and the physical strain of fielding made the latter stages of the innings feel like an extra 20‑25 overs of effort. Yet, he remained satisfied, saying the victory was “extremely rewarding” given the circumstances.

The win gave India an eight‑wicket triumph and a 2‑0 series lead, with a third and final ODI still to be played in New Chandigarh. Gill’s record also eclipsed Glen Maxwell’s previous highest chase‑score of 201 not out, reinforcing his place in cricketing history as the only captain to post double centuries in both Tests and ODIs.

Looking forward, Gill hinted that the team might experiment with its bench players for the upcoming match, aiming to find the optimal combination before the series concludes.
