Geneva 2026 to Host the Youngest Ever World Chess Title Showdown

Geneva will become the arena for the most youthful World Chess Championship match in history, as Indian champion D. Gukesh prepares to defend his crown against 20‑year‑old Uzbek challenger Javorhiri Sindarov.

The FIDE World Chess Championship Match 2026, announced on Tuesday, will run from 25 November through 15 December and consist of up to 14 classical games. The first player to achieve 7½ points wins; if the score remains level, a rapid tie‑break decides the victor.

Both players will be exactly 20 when the games commence, setting a new record for the youngest title contest. Gukesh rose to prominence after his 2024 triumph over Ding Liren in Singapore, becoming the youngest world champion at 18.

Sindarov earned the right to challenge by winning the 2026 Candidates Tournament in Cyprus, sealing first place with one round to spare. His rapid progress follows a strong performance at the 2025 FIDE World Cup.

FIDE interim president and ex‑world champion Vishy Anand welcomed the outcome, noting that the United States and Cyprus also placed bids to host the match. The encounter is the climax of the FIDE World Championship cycle.
