Sunil Gavaskar's ascent began in Mumbai schools, where his triple‑score feats of 246, 222 and 85 in 1966 made headlines across the country. That same year the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named him Best Schoolboy Cricketer, positioning him for a rapid rise through domestic cricket.

After a debut in the Ranji Trophy during the 1966‑67 season, Gavaskar spent four seasons sharpening his craft against seasoned bowlers. Consistent domestic form earned him a Test call‑up in 1971 against England.

His international career spanned from 1971 to 1987, during which he featured in 125 Tests and 108 One‑Day Internationals.
