Remembering Gambhir’s heroic Test effort that turned a defeat into a draw

When New Zealand piled up 619 runs at Napier in March 2009, most observers thought India’s tour was doomed. The follow‑on after a first‑innings 305 made the situation even more precarious. Gautam Gambhir, then 27, responded with a marathon innings that would become the hallmark of his Test career.

Opening with Murali Vijay, Gambhir faced a disciplined bowling attack. After Vijay fell for 22, Gambhir built a 133‑run partnership with Rahul Dravid, occupying the crease for 376 balls. Dravid’s eventual dismissal did not deter Gambhir; he then added 97 runs with Sachin Tendulkar, batting through 191 deliveries. A final stand with VVS Laxman produced another 96 runs, requiring 289 balls. In total, Gambhir faced 436 balls, scoring 137 runs over 643 minutes – the longest innings of his career.

India reached 476 for four wickets, and VVS Laxman’s unbeaten 124, together with Yuvraj Singh’s swift 54, ensured the match ended in a draw. The innings is remembered for its sheer resilience, complementing Gambhir’s broader record of nine Test centuries, 11 ODI hundreds and a key role in India’s 2011 World Cup victory.

Post‑retirement, Gambhir entered coaching, taking charge as head coach on 9 July 2024. Under his guidance, India claimed the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2026. His coaching tenure is scheduled to continue through the 2027 ODI World Cup. Born on 14 October 1981 in Delhi, Gambhir celebrated his 45th birthday on the day of this article, reminding fans of his enduring contributions to Indian cricket.
