From Kannur to Munich: The Legacy of Manuel Frederick

Manuel Frederick’s story is a remarkable journey from the streets of Kannur, Kerala, to the Olympic podium in Munich. Born on 20 October 1947, he first played football locally before being recruited to the Army school team in Bangalore, where his talent for goalkeeping emerged.

He earned his first cap for India in 1971 and went on to represent the nation for seven years. Frederick was part of the Indian squad that won silver at the 1973 World Cup in the Netherlands and competed again at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina. His most celebrated achievement came at the 1972 Munich Olympics, where his saves helped secure a bronze medal for India.

At the domestic level, Frederick turned out for clubs such as ASC, HAL, Services, Uttar Pradesh, and the celebrated Mohan Bagan. Known as “Tiger” among peers, he was especially renowned for his penalty‑stroke expertise.

In 2019, the Major Dhyan Chand Award recognized his lifelong contributions to Indian sport. Frederick passed away on 31 October 2025 in Bangalore, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire aspiring hockey players from Kerala and beyond.
