From District Courts to Asian Games Gold: India’s Hockey Selection System

The road to representing India in hockey is a multi‑stage journey that starts on district courts and culminates on the Asian Games podium. After securing a place in a district side, a player must impress enough to be drafted into the state team, which competes in a series of Hockey India‑sanctioned events. The Senior National Hockey Championship, the most influential domestic tournament, serves as the primary scouting ground. First contested in 1928 under the name Rangaswami Cup, it was rebranded in 2011 and now features 29 teams across three divisions. Division A consists of 12 teams split into four pools; the top two from each pool advance to the quarter‑finals, followed by semi‑finals and a final. Divisions B and C operate with promotion ambitions, each containing 10 and 7 teams respectively, arranged in two pools. Exceptional performers are invited to a national camp where selectors assess technical ability, physical conditioning and tactical awareness. The Hockey India League adds another competitive layer, allowing players to showcase their talent in a high‑visibility environment. Government‑backed school‑level talent identification programs are now in place, aiming to broaden the talent base and sustain India’s dominance in international hockey.
