India's freedom‑day eve speech highlights role of sportspersons

President Draupadi Murmu, addressing the nation on the eve of the 80th Independence Day, placed sportspersons at the forefront of her narrative on nation‑building. She reminded citizens that the responsibilities bestowed by freedom extend beyond political rights to include active participation in the country's development.

The President enumerated various groups—students, teachers, scientists, engineers, doctors, farmers, laborers, craftsmen, and artists—before stressing that athletes, through their discipline and achievements, boost both morale and international standing. She called on every Indian to internalise the spirit of service that the Constitution demands.

"Our tricolour stands for the sacrifices of countless heroes," Murmu declared. "As we celebrate 80 years of sovereignty, let us also celebrate the everyday heroes—whether they are scoring runs, curing illnesses, or tilling the soil."

She also conveyed gratitude to the armed forces, police, judiciary, and diplomatic corps, noting that their steadfast commitment safeguards the freedoms that enable all professions, including sports, to flourish.
