Former Indian T20 Captain Reflects on Sudden Exit and Future Plans

NEW DELHI, Aug 30 — Surya Kumar Yadav, who captained India to a historic T20 World Cup triumph in 2026, opened up about his unexpected removal from the national T20 roster. The veteran cricketer described the decision as “something I never imagined happening in 2026.”

Yadav explained that he had been training with a view toward leading India at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the next World Cup. He said, “I was fully committed to the upcoming challenges, both at the Olympics and the T20 circuit.”

During an interview on a well‑known cricket program, he recalled the moment he learned of his exclusion: “When I saw my name missing, I just smiled. I have always faced adversity with calm and a smile.” He added that he is thankful for the experiences that have defined his career.

According to Yadav, a selector reached out a few days before the official squad list was released, saying, “It feels like the right time to move forward.” The former captain chose not to react publicly, trusting that the decision was made in the team’s best interest.

He praised the newly appointed captain Shreyas Iyer, calling him an “excellent player, a good person and a competent leader.” Nonetheless, Yadav expressed disappointment. “We have not lost a series in two years, we secured the Asia Cup and the World Cup. When everything is going well, why alter the course?”

Performance figures were also discussed. Yadav scored 242 runs in the 2026 World Cup but faced a dip in form in the IPL: after a prolific 717‑run season in 2025, he managed only 270 runs for Mumbai Indians in 2026.

The interview highlighted Yadav’s blend of respect for the new leadership and genuine surprise at being dropped just before another major tournament.
