ETPL aims to broaden talent pool and grassroots cricket across Europe

The European T20 Premier League (ETPL) is set to focus on enlarging the cricket talent pool and reinforcing grassroots structures throughout Europe, according to former South African star Jonty Rhodes. Leveraging insights from the Indian Premier League’s longevity and the rapid ascent of SA20, Rhodes believes the new competition can serve as a developmental engine for the sport.

During a media interview, Rhodes stressed that the league’s success will be measured not just by the championship trophy but by how many new players emerge from local clubs, schools and regional academies. His selection of Ireland’s rising international Jay Mundle as the league’s inaugural pick exemplifies the emphasis on scouting fresh talent.

Rhodes recalled his observations of SA20 rekindling cricket interest in South Africa, comparable to the surge in football excitement after World Cups. He expects ETPL to produce a similar ripple effect, inspiring young Europeans to take up the sport and revitalising existing cricketing nations.

Having coached Sweden for two and a half years, Rhodes noted that passion for cricket now spans at least 30 ICC member countries in Europe. He concluded that a robust ecosystem—balancing elite competition with community development—will be the key determinant of ETPL’s long‑term impact.
