Ecuador's Elvira Espinosa Sets Personal Best for Dakar Gold

Elvira Espinosa of Ecuador claimed the first gold of the Dakar Youth Olympic Games 2026 on Sunday, touching the wall first in the women's 400 metre freestyle with a time of 4:22.87 seconds.

The victory gave Ecuador an early highlight at the multi-sport event, which is taking place in Senegal and is the first Olympic-level competition hosted on the African continent.

Speaking after the race, Espinosa said winning the opening gold of the Games filled her with happiness. She thanked all those who had supported her along the way.

The swimmer lowered her previous best time of 4:25.34, set at the 2026 South American Youth Games. She said this was her strongest race in every competition she had entered, and that the gold was the most special of them all.

The fastest heat started at roughly 10:19 a.m. local time in the outdoor 50-metre pool at the Complexe Tour l'Ouf. Clouds covered the sky and the temperature hovered near 30 degrees Celsius. Espinosa noted that Ecuador has similar weather, though its sun is not as strong. She added that the water conditions were fine and caused her no trouble.

Liah Markgraaff of South Africa was credited with a time of 4:26.13 seconds, while Belgium's Celia Pacx swam 4:28.37 seconds.

Markgraaff said the result was remarkable and showed that athletes in the region were improving steadily. She added that she believed the continent would soon be ready to host large events of this kind again.

The fourth Summer Youth Olympic Games are being held in the Senegalese cities of Dakar, Diamniadio and Saly until November 13, with swimming competitions set to run until November 6.

The opening ceremony took place on Saturday at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, roughly 30 kilometres from Dakar. The 55,000-capacity venue hosted the lavish start to the Games, which are the first Olympic event staged in Africa.
