Delhi Launches Sports Cup to Showcase College Athletic Talent
New Delhi, October 27: A new inter-university sporting event, the DDA-University Sports Cup 2026, got under way in Delhi on Tuesday with an inauguration ceremony at the Roshanara Club. Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Lieutenant Governor TS Sandhu jointly declared the tournament open. The initiative is aimed at improving sporting talent among the city's college students.
An official familiar with the event said the cup will see 10 universities compete across five team sports. The organisers see it as a stage where young athletes can assess their capabilities, demonstrate their talent and aspire to excellence.
In a post on X, Sandhu said the cup was inaugurated alongside Mandaviya and GNCTD Minister Ashish Sood. He said the competition would unite universities from across Delhi, help hone sporting skills, build teamwork and foster a healthy culture of competition.
Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sandhu said sport helps people stay committed through tough times and move forward with greater determination. He asked young players to compete with passion, maintain fair play and become inspirations for a sports-loving Viksit Bharat by 2047.
Sandhu also wrote that team sports provide a valuable lesson: when people work together, they can achieve far more. He expressed the hope that young athletes would carry the spirit of unity, discipline and perseverance from the field into their lives.
On October 23, the Lieutenant Governor released the poster and video for the tournament along with the Vice Chancellor of DTU Delhi and the Vice Chairman of the DDA. He said the effort was inspired by Prime Minister Modi's vision of putting youth power to use, and that the government is committed to refining sporting talent, strengthening sports infrastructure and building a developed Delhi where young people can convert their abilities into success.
He wished the players their best performances and extended good wishes to every participating team.
