Delhi court order prompts roadmap for transparent yoga governance
The Delhi High Court’s recent judgment has set in motion a fresh roadmap for the governance of competitive yoga in India. The Yoga Federation of India (YFI), which has been advocating for the sport’s systematic development since 1974, announced that it will file a formal application with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports to obtain National Sports Federation (NSF) status.
The court’s ruling revoked the earlier national sport recognition for yoga and instructed the ministry to initiate a new, transparent, and legally sound recognition procedure consistent with the National Sports Development Code. YFI described the decision as a critical breakthrough for transparency, accountability, and good governance within Indian sport administration.
Over the past five decades, YFI has conducted tournaments at district, state, and national levels, created technical standards, and overseen the training of judges, coaches, and athletes. The federation asserts that the upcoming recognition process should guarantee equal opportunity for all eligible bodies, thereby bolstering the sport’s institutional integrity.
In its upcoming agenda, YFI plans to seek a meeting with Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya and Indian Olympic Association President PT Usha. The federation will use the platform to present a detailed long‑term development plan for competitive yoga and to negotiate the steps required to reconstitute its institutional identity on a national scale.
President Dr. Aniruddh Gupta emphasized that the court’s order provides an essential opening to build an administrative framework where transparency, democratic representation, athlete welfare, and adherence to law are paramount. He also noted that preparations for the 11th Asian Yoga Championship slated for 2027 have already begun, with YFI collaborating closely with the ministry and the Olympic Association to field a strong Indian squad.
The Asian championship, organized under the Asian Yoga Federation, is projected to feature national federations from 17 Asian countries. Consequently, YFI has launched a comprehensive talent‑identification, selection, and intensive training programme to ready Indian yoga athletes for international competition.
Secretary Dr. Abhinav Joshi recalled YFI’s half‑century legacy of fostering competitive yoga. He remarked that the 2019 governmental push to develop yoga as a sport was initially embraced, yet the ensuing administrative model fell short of the democratic and inclusive standards the federation envisioned. Joshi appealed to the ministry to ensure the new recognition process is fully transparent, fair, and aligned with the national development code, confident that this will yield lasting benefits for Indian athletes and the sport’s global standing.
