Defending Champion Rybakina Pulls Out of 2026 WTA Finals Over Health Concerns

Elena Rybakina, the world’s top‑ranked player, has announced her withdrawal from the 2026 WTA Finals in Indian Wells due to a viral illness. The announcement, made on November 8, conveyed her regret to fans and underscored that her body is not prepared for the demanding final tournament of the season.

Rybakina noted that she enjoyed a highly successful campaign, capturing her third Grand Slam at the US Open, climbing back to No.1, and compiling a 54‑14 win‑loss record. She will now spend time recuperating at home, with plans to return stronger for the 2027 calendar.

The WTA confirmed that Marta Kostyuk will step into Rybakina’s spot in Group 1, kicking off with a match against Linda Noskova on Sunday. Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula are slated to face the group in subsequent round‑robin games.

Having entered Indian Wells as the defending champion after an unbeaten run in the 2025 Riyadh edition, Rybakina also finished the year as the PIF‑presented world No.1 singles player, even though she will miss the Finals.
