Deepa Karmakar’s Historic Journey: From Tripura Roots to Olympic Podium Near‑Miss

Emerging from Agartala, Tripura, Deepa Karmakar took her first gymnastics steps at six years old. Mentored by Soma Nandi and Bishweshwar Nandi, she overcame early challenges—most notably flat feet—by building a resilient arch, a testament to her determination.

The 2008 junior nationals victory in Jalpaiguri launched her onto India’s gymnastics map. Four years later, at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, she earned a bronze medal, the first for an Indian woman in the sport. Success followed with another bronze at the Asian Championships and a groundbreaking fifth place at the 2015 World Championships.

Deepa’s qualification for the 2016 Rio Olympics made history: she was the first Indian gymnast to qualify and the first Indian woman to reach an Olympic final in any gymnastics discipline. In Rio, she narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth after a 0.15‑point shortfall.

Her golden moment arrived in July 2018 at the FIG World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey, where she won vault gold—the first international gold for India in gymnastics. After retiring in 2024, she was celebrated with top national honors: Arjuna Award (2015), Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna (2016) and Padma Shri (2017).
