Commonwealth Games 2026: Nirupama Devi First Indian to Miss Medal

The Commonwealth Games in Glasgow delivered a historic, if unwelcome, moment for Indian weightlifting when Nirupama Devi became the first Indian lifter to finish without a medal in the women’s 63kg class. After a successful 93kg snatch on her second try, she could not lift 123kg in the clean and jerk despite three attempts, leading to a DNF outcome.

India’s overall weight‑lifting haul remains respectable with seven medals, yet the loss highlighted the challenges faced by upcoming athletes. Veteran gold‑medallist Mirabai Chanu was present to support the team, but the pressure proved too great for the young lifter.

The event was dominated by Canada’s Moude Charon, who broke the games record with a 232kg total (102kg snatch, 130kg clean and jerk). England’s Sara Davis Smell captured silver at 217kg, while Norway’s Femi‑Krysti Note earned bronze with 216kg.

India’s day was not without triumphs: Valluari Ajay Babu narrowly missed gold in the men’s 79kg, Gyaneshwari Yadav took silver in the 53kg division, and Bindiya Rani Devi added a bronze in the 58kg category.
