Cricket Returns to Olympics: Key Qualifier Rules Changed
The ICC has announced changes to the cricket qualification structure for the Los Angeles Olympics 2028. The qualifiers for both men's and women's events will now be held in January and February 2028, instead of 2027.
A Cricinfo report says the decision to postpone the qualifiers means the tournaments will take place less than six months before the Olympic Games in June. The qualifiers will feature teams competing against each other, with the best performers earning Olympic berths.
Cricket is set to return to the Olympic programme for the first time since 1904. Six men's and six women's teams will battle for medals. Four women's teams, Australia, India, South Africa and England, have already secured their places through the T20 World Cup 2026.
For the men's competition, the highest-ranked qualified teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania in the ICC T20I rankings as of December 31, 2026, will receive direct entry. The United States has a route to a fifth automatic slot if its men's or women's team climbs into the top 15 between June 30 and December 31, 2026. The US men are currently 13th, while the US women stand at 19th.
The ICC had previously stated that if the US women failed to make the top 15, the fifth spot would go to the highest-ranked team from any continent that had not qualified, based on rankings as of March 1, 2027.
That rule has now been changed. If the US women's team does not enter the top 15, the fifth Olympic spot in the women's event will go to the side that performs best at the Women's Champions Trophy next year.
The last remaining spot in each category will be determined by the winner of the qualifiers. Eight teams will contest each qualifier, and the champions of both events will become the sixth team in the main Olympic tournament.
The venues for the men's and women's events have yet to be finalised. Each qualifier will include the automatic qualifiers, the seven highest-ranked remaining teams and the winner of the Caribbean Regional Qualifier.
Meanwhile, the 2028 T20 World Cups will also run almost in parallel. The women's tournament will be held in Pakistan from September 7 to October 1, and the men's event will take place in Australia and New Zealand from October 12 to November 12.
Cricket's only previous Olympic appearance came at the 1900 Paris Games. After 128 years, the sport is making its return to the Olympic stage.
