Mark your calendars for October 29 to November 4, 2027, when Malta transforms into a powerhouse of youthful athleticism for the Commonwealth Youth Games. The opening ceremony on the 29th will set the stage for 1,200 elite athletes aged 14-18 representing 74 Commonwealth countries, competing over six thrilling days starting October 30.
Eight sports will take center stage: athletics and para athletics, swimming and para swimming, netball, sailing, squash, triathlon, water polo, and weightlifting. Action will span Malta and Gozo at premier sites like Cottonera Indoor Pool, Tal-Qroqq National Pool, Marsa Athletics Stadium, Marsa Sports Centre, Mellieha Bay, Gozo Indoor Sports Pavilion, and Marsalforn Bay.
A landmark moment arrives with the most extensive para program ever, expanding from the 2023 Trinidad and Tobago games. Sailing and water polo make their youth games debut, injecting innovation into the tradition that began in Edinburgh in 2000 as a launchpad for future Olympic and Commonwealth champions.
Commonwealth Sport CEO Katie Sadlier shared her excitement: “Expect a vibrant, competitive vibe in Malta 2027, spotlighting local sports excellence. Our top-tier venues will create life-changing moments for young athletes, fueling the development of future icons. We can’t wait!”
Echoing this, Malta’s Sports Minister Clifton Grima emphasized infrastructure investments: “We’ve modernized existing sites and unveiled state-of-the-art facilities to foster peak performance. These games will harness this legacy infrastructure, delivering lasting value to athletes, communities, and generations ahead.”
As Malta gears up, the Youth Games reaffirm their role in nurturing global talent, blending competition, inclusivity, and Mediterranean charm.
