Commonwealth Games 2026: Indian Judokas and Boxers Poised for Gold

Glasgow, 31 July – Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi arrived at the Commonwealth Games to boost morale among Indian athletes. He asserted that the judokas and boxers who have advanced to the finals are likely to secure gold medals for India.

In judo, Asmita De’s victory over Scotland’s Summer Shaw in the women’s 48 kg semi‑final guarantees her a place against Canada’s Heidi Quach. Harsh Singh, representing the men’s 60 kg division, defeated Australia’s Pedro Carlos Antun Neto and will meet Australian Joshua Kat in the final. Yamini Maurya, competing at 57 kg, overcame South Africa’s Donne Breytenback and will challenge England’s Acelia Toparak for the top podium spot.

Boxing also showcases strong Indian contenders. Ankush Pangal’s 5‑0 triumph over Canada’s Joshua Ofori in the men’s 80 kg semi‑final sets up a gold‑medal bout, while Preeti Pawar’s win against Zambia’s Catherine Mwape secures a final showdown with Canada’s Scarlett Delgado in the women’s 54 kg category.

Sanghvi also spoke about Rohit, a boxer from a modest village in Gujarat’s Sidhi community. Though he suffered a narrow loss, Rohit promised a comeback with doubled effort and training, invoking the phrase ‘Jai Bajrangbali’ as his rallying cry.

With these athletes positioned for gold, India’s medal count at the 2026 Commonwealth Games could receive a substantial lift from judo and boxing.
