Comeback Gold: Manisha Bhanwala Stuns Abigail Nate in Astana

Indian wrestler Manisha Bhanwala produced one of the most thrilling performances in the country's wrestling history, winning gold at the Senior World Wrestling Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. The 59 kg women's final on Friday ended with Manisha coming from behind to beat America's Abigail Nate 8-6.

The win is India's first gold at this championship, a breakthrough that follows near misses by Neelam (50 kg) and Kajal (76 kg), who each lost in their respective finals.

Nate looked in control early on. A takedown brought her four points, and she moved ahead 5-0 before India's challenge to the call failed. A further point and a warning for Manisha pushed the score to 6-0, and the American appeared on course for victory.

Before the interval, however, Manisha pushed Nate outside the mat, earning a point and cutting the gap. The turning point came after the break. Manisha took Nate down, but the American team disputed the action, saying the referee had whistled to stop the bout. The protest was rejected, and Manisha received a point along with a positional edge on the ground.

At 6-4, she used a gut-wrench to turn Nate over and gain two more points. Her attempt to pin her opponent for a fall was unsuccessful, but the momentum had swung decisively. Nate defended her 6-6 position on criteria, only for Manisha to land another takedown and go ahead 8-6. She held that lead through the closing moments.

Manisha's journey to the title included a semifinal win over Mongolia's Bolortuya Khurelkhuu, which set up her chance at gold. Her opening bout in the pre-quarterfinal saw her beat Canada's Lauren Beauregard 6-2. Her gold medal finish now stands as a historic moment for Indian women's wrestling.
