Coach Conrad backs Breyton’s form, Ryan Rikelton to keep wickets for South Africa

South Africa’s cricket board released a 17‑man squad for the upcoming second Test against Australia, introducing Matthew Breyton in place of Tristan Stubs. Ryan Rikelton has been appointed the side’s wicket‑keeper for the series.

Stubs struggled to make an impact in the first Test, contributing only 33 runs across both innings. Breyton, despite limited exposure in the longest format – just two Tests with a total of 14 runs – has been on a roll in limited‑overs cricket, highlighted by a commanding century in the recent ODI at Darburn.

Head coach Shukri Conrad spoke in a video posted on Cricket South Africa’s social channels, lauding Breyton’s recent performances and emphasizing his temperament and character as key attributes. Conrad also noted that Rikelton’s inclusion behind the stumps may force a decision on whether the keeper will bat lower down the order or maintain his opening position.

The selectors also ruled out all‑rounder Tony de Jordy because of a lingering hamstring injury. Fast bowler Kagiso Rabada is expected to return to the playing eleven after sitting out the first match due to a minor injury. The pace options – Enric Nortje, Marko Janse, Vian Muldar, Gerald Coetzee, Dan Patterson and Corbin Bos – remain unchanged.

The Proteas aim to rebound on Sunday and restore confidence after the opening loss.
