Coach Akashi Guides Manisha’s Technical Upgrade Ahead of Asian Games

Japanese coach Kohei Akashi, head of the Inspire Institute of Sport, has been a key figure in Indian wrestler Manisha’s preparation for the 2026 Asian Games. Under his mentorship, Manisha has refined her techniques to suit the 57 kg weight class, focusing on executing moves from both left‑ and right‑handed stances.

"Working with Coach Akashi has opened new technical possibilities for me," Manisha said. "His feedback helped me adjust my style and become comfortable wrestling from either side, which is essential in the lighter weight category."

Manisha’s shift from the 62 kg to the 57 kg division required a comprehensive overhaul of her training, emphasizing strength, agility, and mental adaptation. She stresses that changing her mindset to align with the new weight class is as critical as the physical work.

The Asian Games represent Manisha’s first appearance at a major continental event, a milestone that fuels her determination. She aims to deliver her best performance for India, drawing confidence from the collaborative environment of the national training camp where athletes learn from each other.

Her wrestling journey started in 2013 when her father enrolled her in a fitness camp. Over the years, she transformed initial doubts into mental fortitude, especially after 2021, when she felt stronger mentally despite occasional injuries.

Beyond personal goals, Manisha is inspired by the growing number of young girls in her village who are taking up wrestling. She enjoys coaching them, seeing it as a way to give back to the sport that has shaped her life.
