How a Cleaning Job Fueled Rinku Singh’s Determination
When Kolkata Knight Riders announced Rinku Singh as a key player for the 2023 IPL season, few remembered the humble job that once occupied his afternoons – sweeping the floors of a coaching centre.
Born on 12 October 1997 in Aligarh, Rinku grew up in a family where his father delivered gas cylinders and his five brothers shared limited resources. The household’s financial woes often forced the young cricketer to choose between buying a new ball and feeding the family.
His father, anxious about an uncertain career, discouraged Rinku’s cricketing pursuits, occasionally resorting to discipline that bordered on punishment. Despite this, Rinku’s brothers stood by him, and some local benefactors provided the equipment he could not afford.
During a particularly strained period, Rinku’s brother arranged a cleaning gig at a local academy. The role involved mopping the practice area after sessions. Recognizing that the job could distract him from his sport, Rinku made a bold decision: he refused to continue the work and returned full‑time to cricket practice.
The move paid dividends. He broke into the Under‑16 state team, receiving mentorship from former players Mohammed Jisan and Masood Amin, who helped refine his technique and mental game.
Rinku’s first professional contract arrived in 2017 with Punjab Kings for ten lakh rupees, though he did not see the field that year. In 2018 Kolkata Knight Riders placed an eighty‑lakh‑rupee bid on him, a sum that lifted his family out of immediate financial distress.
His IPL 2023 statistics read like a fairy‑tale: 474 runs in fourteen matches at an average of 59.25. The performance secured him a debut in T20 internationals for India, followed by an ODI debut in December of the same year.
He now boasts 702 runs in 48 T20 internationals (average 36.94, three fifties), 55 runs from two ODIs, 3,757 first‑class runs, and 2,418 List‑A runs. In the IPL, he has contributed 1,394 runs across 73 games as a left‑handed opening batsman.
Rinku Singh’s journey proves that a modest cleaning job, far from being a setback, became a catalyst that reinforced his resolve to succeed on the biggest cricketing stages.
