City Survive Brighton Thriller on Penalties, Book Carabao Cup Last 8

Manchester, October 29: Manchester City came through a tense and turbulent encounter with Brighton and Hove Albion, prevailing 4-3 on penalties to book a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Brighton struck first when Malick Yalcouye scored in the 30th minute. City found an equaliser before half-time through Matteo Kovacic, who curled home a stunning long-range shot. Soon after the break, Georginio Rutter put Brighton back in front, setting up a tense finish.

The visitors came close to going further ahead, but Jeronimo Rulli made an excellent save to deny Rutter a second goal. Moments later, in the 72nd minute, Ryan Cherki's free-kick took a deflection off Vitor Reis and beat the goalkeeper, restoring parity and taking the tie to a shootout.

Rulli then stepped up as the match-winner, stopping two penalties to secure a 4-3 victory for City in the shootout. The result builds on City's earlier 5-0 win over Norwich City in September.

Enzo Maresca's side still have the opportunity to defend the trophy they won at Wembley last March. If they go all the way this season, it would be their 10th League Cup triumph, matching Liverpool's record for the most titles in the competition.

Next up, City will host Bradford City in the quarter-finals, with the match due in the week beginning December 14. Bradford have already qualified for the last eight after a 2-0 win over Peterborough United, with goals from Macaulay Gillespie and Adam Phillips. Their path also included wins over Rochdale, Burnley and Leyton Orient, their first quarter-final appearance in this competition since 2012/13.
