Champion, Captain, Record‑Holder: Dhanraj Pillay’s Journey

The career of Dhanraj Pillay reads like a list of firsts for Indian hockey. He is the only player to have contested four consecutive Olympic tournaments, four World Cups (1990, 1994, 1998, 2002), four Champions Trophies (1995, 1996, 2002, 2003) and four Asian Games (1990, 1994, 1998, 2002). At the 1998 Asian Games in Bangkok, Pillay finished as the tournament’s top scorer. His versatility, speed and powerful drag-flick made him a constant threat, especially during penalty corner situations. After retiring from international hockey in 2004, Pillay’s contributions were recognised with the nation’s highest sporting honour, the Khel Ratna, for the 1999‑2000 period, followed by the Padma Shri in 2001.
