Carrick Calls Fernandes a Key Man for Man United
London: Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has voiced firm support for Bruno Fernandes, recalling the midfielder to the starting lineup for the Premier League meeting with Chelsea and praising his value to the squad.
Fernandes missed out on the starting XI in the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, but he is now back in the side and set to captain Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The return follows two successive defeats, and Carrick has made three changes, including the recall of Lisandro Martinez and Matheus Cunha.
Carrick said Fernandes's experience and understanding of the club make him a crucial presence. In an exclusive interview at Stamford Bridge, he said, “Bruno is a big player, and he gives so much to the team through his experience. He has seen plenty here, achieved a lot, and shown what he can do for the team. He is an important part of us, and I feel we have a good balance today. Our team is strong, and all the players are excited about this game.”
The decision came shortly after Carrick had strongly defended Fernandes's commitment to Manchester United. The midfielder's position had been questioned after his absence from the Bournemouth match.
The manager also rejected any uncertainty over the 31-year-old's captaincy, stating there was no question of taking the role away from him. “Bruno is fully committed to this football club, there is no problem,” Carrick said. “We are now focusing on Saturday's match.”
Carrick highlighted Fernandes's leadership qualities and confirmed he would continue as captain despite the club's difficult recent form. “It doesn't matter, he has led the team very well for many years and in many games, and he will continue to do so,” he added.
The coach also stressed that United would need a collective effort rather than dependence on one player to win crucial moments. “Whether someone scores or someone plays a big role, that is the beauty of this sport,” he said.
He concluded, “There is always another chance, another moment that can be fully taken advantage of, whether it's Matheus today, another player, or the whole team performing well to win the match. That is all we want.” Manchester United will hope to put their poor run behind them and return to winning ways against Chelsea.
