Cape Town Final Day: Labuschagne Under Pressure

Australia's hopes in the Cape Town Test rest on the fifth day, and attention is turning to Marnus Labuschagne. Once a reliable presence in the middle order, the batter is going through a difficult period, and this innings may be a defining moment for him.

Former Australian cricketer Carey O'Keefe believes Labuschagne will bat with his career firmly in mind on Saturday. He noted that the batter has not scored a Test century since 2023 and stressed that he has been given enough time to turn things around.

O'Keefe said, 'He has been brilliant for Australia, but the runs have dried up. He has had plenty of chances, but he has not been able to get out of this bad patch. On Saturday, he is playing for his career.'

Former Australian all-rounder Brendon Julian observed that Labuschagne looked edgy and had not yet settled at the crease. He suggested that the uncertainty over the batter's place could work in his favour, allowing him to play with freedom. Julian also said he did not expect Labuschagne to feature in the Perth Test.

Michael Hussey stated that he would not call this match the end of Labuschagne's Test career, even if he fails again. He said the batter might have to sit out for a period, but that other players have returned from similar struggles and gone on to help Australia.

The statistics highlight the scale of the slump. Labuschagne has not scored a century in his last 48 innings and has not made a half-century in three years. His last Test hundred came at Old Trafford in 2023, and his average since then is 24.77.

In total, he has played 67 Tests across 121 innings, scoring 4,857 runs with 11 centuries and 25 fifties.

The final day of the Cape Town Test takes place on Saturday, with Australia needing 288 runs to defeat South Africa. For Labuschagne, the next few hours could shape the rest of his Test journey.
