Campbell shatters 27-year record as West Indies dominate second ODI

In Guwahati’s Barsapara Cricket Stadium, West Indies’ middle‑order batter John Campbell rewrote ODI history on September 30. Scoring 101 runs off just 65 deliveries, Campbell broke a 27‑year‑old record held by Ricardo Powell, who had once struck a 72‑ball century against India.

The Caribbean side, after losing the toss, struggled early when Kiwan Carter fell for nine off ten balls. The situation improved dramatically when captain Shai Hope joined Campbell at the crease. Their 110‑run partnership for the second wicket, compiled in 79 balls, set a solid foundation for the innings.

Campbell’s on‑slaught featured nine fours and five sixes, pushing his strike rate to an impressive 148. This effort placed him among the fastest West Indies centuries in One Day Internationals and positioned him second only to Brian Lara’s 45‑ball hundred in the global 50‑over context.

Both squads entered the match with changes. India brought in pacer Akib Nabi for debut, replacing Nitish Kumar Reddy, while West Indies made four alterations to their XI after the opening loss. India’s first‑match victory had come by eight wickets under Shubman Gill’s captaincy.

Current playing XIs: - India: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (c), Virat Kohli, Ruturaj Gaikwad, KL Rahul (wk), Namdeehir, Ravindra Jadeja, Akib Nabi, Gurkeerat Bhullar, Kuldeep Yadav, Prithvi Shaw. - West Indies: John Campbell, Kiwan Carter, Shai Hope (c & wk), Amir Jangoo, Sherfane Rutherford, Rostan Chase, Kiwan Paul, Aljari Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Zaden Sills, Vitel Lodge.

Campbell’s record‑breaking century not only gave West Indies a competitive edge but also added a new chapter to ODI batting records.
