Blue Tigers' heavy defeat ends international window with Uruguay

The Blue Tigers’ international window closed on a somber note as Uruguay stormed to a 6-1 victory in Kolkata. After Darwin Nunez converted a penalty, India rallied when Anirudh Thapa capitalised on a loose ball, slipping the ball past goalkeeper Thiago Cardoso. The celebratory roar from the 37,307 spectators turned into disbelief as Uruguay’s attack, led by Maxi Aráujo’s brace, overwhelmed the hosts. Weather disruptions briefly halted play, but the South Americans returned with renewed vigor, sealing the win with goals in the 53rd, 71st and 86th minutes. The loss adds to India’s recent defeats to Brazil and a draw with Panama, underscoring the challenge of facing multiple World Cup‑winning nations.
