Birthday Special: VVS Laxman's Legacy in Indian Cricket

Few Indian batsmen have combined elegance and resilience the way VVS Laxman did. As he celebrates his 52nd birthday, cricket followers are revisiting the career of a player who was admired for his artistry, his temperament and his remarkable ability to win Test matches in the fourth innings.

Laxman was born in Hyderabad on 1 November 1974. Sunday marks his 52nd birthday. A right-handed batsman with superb technique, he was among the most respected players of his generation. He earned his place in the Test team despite fierce competition from Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Virender Sehwag, a feat that highlights his quality.

His reputation rests largely on his performances with the lower order. Laxman repeatedly put together gritty and influential knocks in Test matches, guiding India to several memorable wins. Those contributions earned him the nickname 'God of the Fourth Innings'.

The list of his standout innings is long. It includes a 281 against Australia in Kolkata in 2001, a 167 against Australia in Sydney in 2000, a 148 against Australia in Adelaide in 2003, a 103 against Sri Lanka in Colombo in 2010 and a 124 in Napier in 2004. Most of these innings were played in the fourth innings. Numerous half-centuries that won or saved matches also feature in his record.

Laxman began his international journey with a Test debut against South Africa in November 1996, and he made his ODI debut against Australia on 9 April 1998. Across 134 Tests and 225 innings, he scored 8,781 runs, including 17 centuries and 56 half-centuries. His 281 against Australia in Kolkata in 2001 was, at one point, the highest Test score by an Indian cricketer.

He also contributed significantly in limited-overs cricket. In 86 ODIs and 83 innings, Laxman scored 2,338 runs, with 6 centuries and 10 fifties. He announced his retirement from international cricket on 18 August 2012.

After retiring, he continued to serve the game through commentary and IPL mentoring. On 13 December 2021, he was named Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy, a post he still holds. He also coaches the India Under-19 and India A teams. Through these roles, he helps develop young cricketers and supports senior players in maintaining their form and fitness.

He has also occasionally taken charge as India's head coach. Under his guidance, the Indian team won the Asian Games gold medal twice. As a mentor, he contributed to Sunrisers Hyderabad's IPL triumph in 2016. In 2011, he received the Padma Shri for his services to cricket, and he may well have a larger role in Indian cricket in the years ahead.
