Bihar Government Hires International Bowlers Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep as Deputy Superintendents

The Bihar Home Department announced on August 10 that former Indian fast bowlers Mukesh Kumar and Akash Deep have been appointed as Deputy Superintendents of Police. Their recruitment was processed under the 2026 amendment to the Direct Recruitment of Outstanding Sports Players rules, which mandates a high‑level committee's recommendation for such appointments.

Both cricketers arrived at the Bihar Police Headquarters to take oath, signalling a shift from international sport to law enforcement. The ceremony was led by Director General of Police Vinay Kumar, who welcomed them and emphasized the value of their teamwork and leadership skills for policing duties.

Attended by senior police officers including Inspector General Manoj Kumar, the event recognized the athletes' contributions to Indian cricket. Mukesh Kumar, who earned his Test debut in July 2023, and Akash Deep, who debuted against England in February 2024, now carry the responsibility of safeguarding law and order in Bihar.

The policy aims to attract more elite athletes into the civil services, leveraging their discipline, fitness, and public profile to enhance police-community relations.
