Montevideo – On July 1, Marcelino Bielsa announced his resignation as Uruguay’s head coach after the nation’s campaign in the 2026 FIFA World Cup concluded at the group stage. Uruguay finished third in Group A, recording draws against Cabo Verde and Saudi Arabia and a loss to Spain, which meant they did not advance.

The 70‑year‑old Argentine described the departure as “deeply painful,” recalling the high hopes he held when he accepted the job. He emphasized that the disappointing finish, coupled with the players’ effort, made the decision even harder.

Bielsa placed the entire responsibility on himself, rejecting any excuses for the team’s position. He admitted that, given the quality of the squad, he was unable to harness the available resources optimally.

Bielsa praised goalkeeper Fernando Muslera for requesting a halftime substitution against Spain after a mistake that led to a goal, calling the gesture a rare display of self‑awareness and generosity.

He also stood by his decision to pull midfielder Federico Valverde in the second half of the final match, explaining that substitutions are a routine part of coaching strategy and that no player was placed in an unfair situation.
