Bennett Leads Zimbabwe Against Afghanistan in UAE Tests
Zimbabwe Cricket has confirmed its squad for a two-match Test series against Afghanistan, taking place in the UAE starting November 5. Brian Bennett has been appointed captain, stepping in for the injured Richard Ngarava.
The first Test begins on November 5, with the second match following on November 13. Both encounters will be held at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
The coaching staff has picked a side that reflects the winning spirit from June’s series against Bangladesh. That series featured a historic innings-and-85-victory at Harare Sports Club, a result that has served as a blueprint for this upcoming tour.
Official statements revealed that Ngarava is still rehabilitating from a back injury and will not feature. Alongside him, fast bowler Takunga Chivanga misses out due to an unrelated injury.
On the batting front, Bennett is surrounded by high-profile talents. Brendon Taylor and Craig Ervine bypassed the domestic ODI tri-series in the UAE to focus entirely on Test preparation. They are backed by a capable lower order featuring Innocent Kaia, Ben Kurhen, Tadiwanashe Marumani, and Wesley Madhevere.
In the middle overs, leg-spinner Graeme Cremer adds wealth to the attack. The squad also sees the comeback of experienced players Kundai Chattha and Vincent Masakadza, who are eager to regain their footing in red-ball cricket.
A key development is the inclusion of Atum Nkwe, an all-rounder who has now satisfied the ICC’s eligibility rules to represent Zimbabwe. The pace battery comprises Blessing Muzarabani, Brad Evans, Nyumai Nyamhuri, and Ernest Masakadza, who steps onto the Test stage for the first time.
Spin options include Cremer, alongside Vincent and Wellington Masakadza. Wicketkeeper Tafadzwa Tsiga rounds out the squad.
