In the heart of Bengaluru, the Indian women’s hockey team is deep into a national camp, sharpening their edges for upcoming battles. Skills enhancement and tactical precision dominate the agenda, guided by chief coach Shourd Marin and advisor Wayne Lombard. Rising star Sakshi Rana, the 18-year-old midfielder, is seizing the moment to elevate her game alongside veterans.
Her senior debut last year—a goal against Spain—marked her as one to watch. The camp’s structured routine, blending intense training with recovery protocols, fosters rapid improvement. Sakshi opened up about the environment: ‘Our weaknesses force daily improvements. Wayne sir excels in tailoring strength and fitness needs, stressing recovery. Everything is taught methodically. Seniors inspire us juniors to push limits.’
From her early days at Sonipat’s Pritam Siwach Academy with coach Kuldeep, Sakshi’s explosive, offensive style took shape. Senior coaches now refine it, merging speed with smart positioning. Meetings highlight refining her scanning habits and vocal presence on the pitch.
‘Coaches said continue my style but work on pre-scanning and talking more on field as a center player,’ Sakshi recounted. ‘Team discussions zero in on structure: ball reception timing and passing over tricks, vital under international pressure.’
The Hockey India League proved a game-changer, pitting her against world-class opponents. ‘HIL skyrocketed my communication confidence. Observing Yibbi Jensen centrally was a masterclass in controlling the game,’ she reflected.
As Sakshi soaks up knowledge, the squad eyes the FIH World Cup 2026 Qualifiers in Hyderabad. Matches kick off March 8 versus Uruguay, followed by Scotland on March 9, and Wales on March 11. This Bengaluru stint is fueling ambitions for global glory.
