Basil Hameed Gets ICC Demerit Point Over Audible Abuse
UAE cricketer Basil Hameed has received a demerit point from the ICC after using audible abusive language following a missed catch in a World Cup League 2 match in Dubai on Sunday.
The Netherlands beat UAE by three wickets in the game, which was played at the ICC Academy Ground.
The Moment of Dismissal
During the ninth over of the Netherlands innings, a catch was put down off Hameed's bowling. Frustrated, he swore loudly enough for everyone on the field to hear.
The Breach
Hameed bowled four overs and gave away 21 runs without taking a wicket. The ICC found him guilty of breaching Article 2.3 of its Code of Conduct for Players and Support Personnel, which covers audible offensive language at international fixtures.
This was his first offence in 24 months. One demerit point has now been recorded against his name.
The Process
Hameed admitted his offence and accepted the punishment handed down by match referee Phil Whitticase of the ICC International Panel, so no formal hearing took place. The complaint came from field umpires Akbar Ali and Virendra Sharma and reserve umpire Shiju Sam.
Possible Penalties
For a Level 1 offence, the ICC can impose a minimum of an official warning. The maximum penalty includes a fine of 50 percent of the player's match fee, along with one or two demerit points.
Accumulating four or more demerit points in 24 months converts them into suspension points, leading to a ban. Two suspension points can mean a ban from one Test, two One-Day Internationals or two T20 Internationals, depending on which comes first. Demerit points remain valid for 24 months.
The Match
UAE made 244 for 8, thanks to unbeaten captain Rahul Chopra's 82 and 68 from Aakashdeep Nath. Max O'Dowd's 103 led the Netherlands to victory in 43.5 overs.
UAE next play Oman on Thursday, followed by a match against the Netherlands on Saturday.
