Ayyar’s aggressive intent set for West Indies series
New Delhi, October 4 – On the eve of a five‑match T20 series against the West Indies, Indian captain Ayush Ayyar said he intends to bring his innate aggression to the crease while ensuring the lineup behind him has a firm base.
“I want to use my natural aggression, but I also want to guarantee that my innings gives a platform to the middle and lower order,” he explained. “My approach will be dictated by the match context. If I’m batting in the Powerplay, I will look to exploit the field restrictions.”
Ayyar reflected on his early career, stating that the same mindset has been with him since his Ranji debut for Mumbai. “When I step onto the field, I immediately think about building a platform for the next batsman. If I can stay in, I trust my ability to hit the ball everywhere – left, right, and straight.”
He also spoke about field analysis. “Often bowlers try to dominate early, especially in the one‑day format, seeking wickets. Even if I am acting as captain or vice‑captain, I still aim to seize the momentum and control the game’s every facet.”
Ayyar, who captains the T20 side and is the ODI vice‑captain, remains a cornerstone of India’s batting order. His performances were instrumental in the 2023 ODI World Cup victory and will be crucial for the 2025 Champions Trophy.
Statistically, the right‑hander has compiled 811 runs in 14 Tests (one hundred, five fifties), 3,136 runs in 82 ODIs (five centuries, 24 fifties) and 1,513 runs in 67 T20 internationals, highlighted by ten half‑centuries.
