Australia secures strong position, 139-run margin at end of third day
Derby, 11 October – With the first Test at Kingsmead moving into its third day, Australia has consolidated a solid lead over South Africa. The hosts posted 390 in their first innings, highlighted by a 190 from Matt Renshaw and a crucial 60 from Steve Smith. Nathan Lyon’s 134‑run partnership with Renshaw proved pivotal.
South Africa were bowled out for 284, the innings losing four wickets before reaching 99 runs. Vian Muller’s spin yielded four scalps for the visitors, while Marco Jansen took three.
Australia’s second innings saw a patient 33 runs added in 5.4 overs, with Nick Maddinson contributing 17 and Travis Head 10 before stumps. The cumulative lead of 139 runs gives Australia a comfortable cushion as they head into the fourth innings.
