Australia Recover to 277/8 as Renwick’s Hundred Leads the Way
In a tightly contested Test at Durban, Australia clawed their way back to a respectable total of 277 for eight wickets, largely thanks to Matt Renwick's resilient century. The Australian opener, after a spell of nine years without a Test hundred, responded with a composed 102 off 204 balls, punctuated by ten fours.
Renwick's path to this landmark has been anything but smooth. After his debut in late 2016, he played seven Tests in 2017, earning two half‑centuries before falling out of the side in 2018. Sporadic appearances in 2023 produced scores of 5*, 0, 2 and 2, leading to a three‑year exclusion. He briefly returned in August 2026 against Bangladesh, managing a meagre eight runs.
The Durban game began with Australia at 24 for two. A partnership of 60 runs between Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne lifted the score to 84 before Smith’s dismissal. Renwick arrived at the crease at 84/3 and soon forged a 36‑run stand with Alex Carey, moving the innings beyond the 100‑run mark.
Captain Pat Cummins then joined Renwick for an 86‑run partnership, pushing the total past 200. A final 47‑run stint with Nathan Lyon took the tally to 277 before the lunch interval, with Renwick unbeaten.
On the South African side, Vian Muller captured the most wickets (four), while Marco Jansen and Ervin Norval each contributed two breakthroughs.
