Australia Coach Confident in Batting Line-up Ahead of NZ Series

Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has defended his batting line-up after a poor showing against South Africa, insisting the side has enough reasons to stay positive. The team lost the series after the Cape Town Test, but McDonald believes the difficult overseas conditions will help the group grow.

The coach's comments come as Australia prepares for a four-Test series against New Zealand. Steve Smith's fitness is a major talking point, along with the make-up of the middle order and the role Cameron Green and Josh Inglis may play.

Green returns from injury after missing the start of the South Africa series. Inglis, meanwhile, has scored two Test centuries overseas and has strengthened his case for selection. McDonald said Australia may look at different combinations as it plans for the New Zealand matches.

McDonald said, 'This is still a very good cricket team with a lot of very good players. We need to balance who comes in and what the next decisions are. If you look at the batting unit, I think we are in a stronger position than we were when the South Africa tour started.'

He stressed that playing abroad is always a major challenge. 'When you play away in foreign conditions, the challenge is always greater, and you get tested in different ways. That is one reason many teams do not win overseas. It is hard. This is not an excuse. We thought we were good enough to come here and win this series.'

Smith's situation has drawn close attention. He used painkiller injections to ease his discomfort but could not pass the final fitness test, which led to him missing the decisive Newlands Test. McDonald said the decision was left to the experienced batter, and Australia will focus on full fitness rather than a hurried comeback.

'The medical team and Steve gave every chance, and that is all you can do,' McDonald said. 'He was not ready the next morning. He accepted that, and we trust our senior players who know their bodies well. Steve's decision was the right one in my view.'

McDonald is optimistic that Smith will be available for the Perth Test against New Zealand next month. He said the immediate plan is to ensure the neck problem is properly addressed so that Smith can take the field with the best possible preparation. Shield cricket will give him match practice and time to prepare.

Marnus Labuschagne also came under scrutiny after failing to make the most of his opportunities in South Africa. McDonald said the team backed him for the tour but will need to reconsider his position as selection decisions approach. He still considers Labuschagne a very good cricketer who tends to perform strongly when back in state cricket.

As Australia turns its focus to New Zealand, selectors will have to weigh Smith's fitness, the middle-order balance and the form of key batters before finalising the squad.
