Athletes argue JP Nautiyal’s experience crucial for medal hopes at Asian Para Games

Ahead of the Asian Para Games scheduled for 2026 in Japan, India’s para‑shooting athletes have united in demanding that chief coach JP Nautiyal accompany them. They contend that his seasoned background is indispensable for achieving podium finishes.

Rakesh, a leading para‑rifle competitor, explained that the mental aspect of shooting relies heavily on consistent coaching. “JP has been our mentor throughout the preparation phase. Removing him now disrupts our focus,” he asserted while noting that no official clarification has been provided by the Sports Authority of India.

Sudha Sharma, who supports her sister Bhakti – an athlete with both hearing and visual impairments – emphasized the coach’s ability to interpret Bhakti’s unique communication cues. She warned that without Nautiyal, Bhakti may encounter critical errors during the competition, potentially lowering India’s medal count.

Srishti Arora added that the team’s camp was running smoothly until the abrupt announcement, calling the decision “demotivating”. She highlighted Nautiyal’s prior involvement in the last Asian Para Games and several international championships, experience she believes will be vital under pressure.

Pavitri, a senior para‑shooting coach, appealed to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Paralympic Committee, insisting that no allegations against Nautiyal have been substantiated and that his dedication, despite personal family health issues, merits his inclusion in the Japanese delegation.
